flash pre-loader tutorial
Welcome!

If you're here, then you probably want to know how to make a flash animation or a flash game, but you can't figure out how to make a pre-loader. Don't worry, we've all been there!

The easiest way to do this, is to simply *give* you the flash preloader template. From here you can build your own animation or drag your existing work into the template, and it will just work.

Step One: Getting the Flash Preloader Template

Right click the link below and select "Save As", and store it somewhere where it won't get lost!
preloader.fla

Now simply open the template by double-clicking it. If Flash is installed, it should open by itself. For some reason if it doesn't, go into Flash and choose "File -> Open."

You should see something similar to what is shown below:

Step Two: Changing some Settings

This is important to do this early! Before you start animating, you need to set your background colour and framerate. Why? Because sometimes changing this after you're done can really mess up your animation / game!

To do this, select "Modify" and then select "Document," as demonstrated below:

And following this, you should see the following window:

The first arrow points to the background colour. The default colour is usually white. You can change this to black, or any colour you like (or even leave it at white).

The second arrow points to the frame rate. The frame rate is the number of frames that are displayed each second. 12 is the default, and this is awefully slow, and only recommended for "frame-by-frame" animations where you have to draw each frame by itself. Otherwise, you might want to up this rate to 20, 25, or even 30. Anything beyond 30 is just overkill.

Step Three: Entering your Information

Alright, you'll want everyone to know who made this, and the title of it too. So let's get to adding that.

Near the top, or wherever your frames are shown, you'll see that there is a name beside some of the frames (the timeline). Click "Insert title here." You may not notice anything changing, but that selects the correct group of frames so you can change the big text that says "MY TITLE GOES HERE" and "By: Name."

Now that it's selected, double click on "MY TITLE GOES HERE" and name it whatever you like. If the title doesn't fit, feel free to make your font size smaller in the preferences box below.

And do the same for "By: Name", and put whichever name your like. If you're paranoid, you can just be anonymous.

Now your preloader is just about done. You can add icons, your logo, delete that crazy "G" peeking through the background, or anything you like. So let's finish up, and move on.

Step Four: Starting the Content

Ok, so you're done with the preloader! Now to get your content in here. Click the name "Main" on your timeline.

Now click the second frame as shown below:

You should now see text that says "Your movie begins here. (delete this and replace with your own)." So do it! Delete that text and start animating!

Congratulations, you're ready to start! Keep at it, and you'll be a flash pro in no time ..
