not really that much actualy. The close up shots of the people running only have about 100 people in them each (probably with the same actors differently aranged each time) and the large pans from the sky are all computer generated. They used the same technology in most notably the Lord of the Rings movies in scenes with armies that called for up to 100,000 extras when they really only used several hundred if that.
