Default Sleep well...

At CERN's LHC(Large Hadron Collider), a giant sub-atomic particle smasher in France(its 27km in diameter and crosses into two countries), they're about to create small black holes here on earth for experimentation purposes.

Just hope they don't destabilize and swallow the earth.

All of the studies I've seen claim all necessary safety precautions have been made. Martin Rees says that the risk of a doomsday scenario is a 1 in 50,000,000 chance. While it sounds like the odds are against anything bad happening, we could be majorly fucked out of existence if something does go wrong.

Why do people mess with this kind of thing? What good implications could it possibly have for the human race, besides getting rid of garbage? Why in the hell would you risk the planet like this, even with those slight odds. I could cease to exist any second. Thats fucking terrifying.

It won't be terrifying when it happens. We'll never know what hit us.

Guys, there is always risk inherent in discovery. The rewards would have to outweigh the risks in order for this sort of thing to be approved.

I realize black holes are scary but I would be more concerned with antimatter. That removes shit from existence instantly. Not to mention a small amount goes a very long way. Although, I wonder if you could get rid of a black hole with it.

The risk of antimatter reaching earth is quite small. There's a lot of matter for it to obliterate before it even comes close.

You could use antigravity in a black hole to create a wormhole. There'd have to be a lot of it, though. That's about it.

Anti-matter wouldn't be an issue because it only annihilates. At worst the amount of anti-matter created in the tube would destroy one of the research projects. It wouldn't create enough to obliterate the earth.

And using my very un-Stephen hawking logic I would think feeding antimatter into a black hole would make it bigger, since black holes decay faster the more they eat, but there's always exceptions.

Well, they're trying to understand the inner-workings of the universe. And black holes are a huge cosmical mistep. They don't follow conventional rules of physics. Implying that our current system of physics isn't neccisarily accurate on a large scale. For example When dealing with gravity, you have to figure in a very small constant (the UGC) to get everything right right. It doesn't sound right for something as absolute as gravity.

Yeah, I know they know what they're doing. I just figured I'd give everyone a heads up.

What do you mean? If theres antimatter thats not contained inside the testing area it will annihilate with the first thing it touches, creating the explosive force of something like a hand grenade per atom/anti-atom anniahlation.

The black holes are only micrometers in diameter.

And black holes don't really hold onto what they suck in. They spit out all the matter in various forms of cosmic radiation normal to the event horizon.

So if your trash is that small...go for it. so long as you don't mind a short blast of x-ray and gamma radiation.

Oh, I thought the query meant antimatter from an outside source. We're pretty screwed if they make it on Earth.

They've already done it on earth. Its not a problem so long as its contained. they make it inside of a vacuum and keep it away from matter with magnets.

I bow to your superior knowlege in this field.

Containment isn't a problem, but it's still pretty dangerous. The small black holes don't worry me at all.

lasers don't emit matter(fermions). they emit bosons, particles that can occupy the same place at the same time, AKA Energy or radiation.

Sorry

but what if they're the exact same in every way, both facing eachother. is it like dividing by 0?

nothing is ever the same. everything is different, down to the smallest particles. But if they were of relatively equal size I suppose they would tear eachother to pieces, much like two galaxies that enter eachothers gravitational pull. its really cool to watch.

Oh dammit which one of those is (was) us, I'm curious as to which part of the catastrophic clusterfuck we may well become in 2.5 billion years

I meant antimatter created by the collider.

I am sure not enough antimatter to annihilate the planet would be created but the prospect of things being removed from existence bothers me. Do we even know all of the effects that would have? Same goes for black holes, theoretically they too remove every aspect of anything unfortunate enough to be eaten by it. It's very possibly gone from this universe, every single aspect of it. Forever forgotten.

only the matter that comes in contact with the antimatter is destroyed. The resulting energy is worldly energy, it doesn't remove things from existence.

Black holes don't destroy matter, they convert it to energy. So its not gone, its just changed forms.
