Default For those Who Doubted The Power of the PS3 Cell Chips

IBM’s latest supercomputer, Roadrunner, has smashed the world supercomputer record. Roadrunner was built using the same Cell chips that power the PlayStation 3, and is more than twice as fast as the previous record holder, Blue Gene. For those of you who want to know just how fast that is, concentrate, here comes the science bit…

"The Roadrunner, which combines 12,960 of the Cell chips with 6,948 standard dual-core AMD Opteron chips and 80 terabytes of memory, is the first supercomputer to top 1 quadrillion calculations a second, or the equivalent of one petaflop.”

This does not make the Cell a better gaming CPU than the one inside the Xbox360. In fact, I'd bet that a computing array using G80s instead of Cell processors, would be considerably faster.

Don't flatter yourself; I own the Xbox360, PS3, and Wii and have preferred my PS3 to the 360 since my Elite red ringed in the beginning of March. It doesn't change the fact that the Cell is not the best gaming processor in the world. Also, GTA IV on the 360 runs at a higher resolution than the PS3 version and doesn't require a 3.3GB install. I hope you enjoy your periodic install like load times with MGS4, and if you aren't too busy with that perhaps you would enjoy playing Haze in all it's PAL standard definition glory.

In other news, I just upgraded my Hard Drive to 250Gb. But this is just temporary. I'm looking for a SS Drive that won't cost somewhere in the vicinity of a mortgage payment.

Three questions: For your PS3? Is it a 7200RPM drive? Have you noticed any sort of performance increase? I was thinking about upgrading to a 250GB 7200RPM drive for my PS3 but haven't been able to make a decision.

all you have to do to make a "faster" supercomputer is add more processors. It doesn't make the cell any better.
