What is the difference between much and many? And why do we use hung and hanged in different context?

View Full Version : Just some randoms things I've been wondering about. Axel 11-09-2006, 12:41 AM What is the difference between much and many? And why do we use hung and hanged in different context? Drunken_Shinobi 11-09-2006, 03:46 PM Much is for a majority that can be counted, but many is probably a term that means a majority that can't be counted. Willy_Wonka 11-09-2006, 06:34 PM hanged and hung basically are completely different. Hanged is referring to execution, and hung is just normal, like "he hung the annoying child on the coat rack" nickychris3 11-11-2006, 11:32 PM This reminds me of a question from Ten Things I Hate About You: "I know you can be under whelmed, and you can be overwhelmed, but can you ever just be, like, whelmed?" gussa 11-12-2006, 07:17 AM and is the universe limitless, is our planet just a proton circling an atom that is just a teensy weensy part of an enourmously large universe? Ryu-Nacho 11-12-2006, 08:38 AM What is the difference between much and many? And why do we use hung and hanged in different context? While it doesn't always make sense, much is used in context for a singular, or uncountable object. Many, on the other hand, is for plural, countable objects. This reminds me of a question from Ten Things I Hate About You: "I know you can be under whelmed, and you can be overwhelmed, but can you ever just be, like, whelmed?" When you're not over or underwhelmed, wouldn't that be the time you're just whelmed? and is the universe limitless, is our planet just a proton circling an atom that is just a teensy weensy part of an enourmously large universe? Scientists say they've measured the approximate size of the universe. I personally think that they're wrong; what would happen when I reached the 'end' of the universe? I don't think I'm going to hit some invisible wall. So, I'd say the universe is infinitely huge. I think you can in Europe. =P ===== While it doesn't always make sense, much is used in context for a singular, or uncountable object. Many, on the other hand, is for plural, countable objects. There's some hand that grabs you and throws you back into the universe, xD. Iron Chef Pizza 11-13-2006, 12:14 AM Our planet IS the universe, scientists just made up the rest so they wouldnt eventually discover everything one day and be out of a job. nickychris3 11-13-2006, 12:45 AM I hope to God you're joking. diet poop 11-13-2006, 06:25 PM Scientists say they've measured the approximate size of the universe. It supposedly like...doubles back on itself or something. When you reach the end of the universe and keep going, you'll find that you're at the opposite end of the universe heading in the same direction! (I'm not an expert so I'm not 100% sure this is what the sciency people were talking about) Drunken_Shinobi 11-13-2006, 07:31 PM Our planet IS the universe, scientists just made up the rest so they wouldnt eventually discover everything one day and be out of a job. This had better be a joke. Ryu-Nacho 11-14-2006, 05:26 PM It supposedly like...doubles back on itself or something. (I'm not an expert so I'm not 100% sure this is what the sciency people were talking about) So, technically, if what you said is true, there is no true end after all. Though, this would bring up some new possibilities, like, dimensionally. Axel 11-14-2006, 11:45 PM If DP's theory is true, that means there are other universes or dimensions. Drunken_Shinobi 11-15-2006, 12:03 AM Then we wouldn't be a "Universe", rather we'd be a "Multi-Verse". I think that if anybody said that to me, my IQ would actually drop a couple of points. As far as theories on the universe go, I believe that nobody will ever be able to know exactly where it all goes, or what it is. I just know that it's expanding, and 99% of it is just empty space. I just got to thinking, there can be controversey among scientists about the creation of the earth or whatever, but just thinking about how the universe came into existence...that's just deep. I mean, it all had to have started someplace, you know? Like, did it just grow from an empty grid of space and time, atom by atom? Did a god really create us? If so why the hell did he/she/it spend so much time in other places when we're the only place in the universe that supports life. If the universe is infinite, then what happened to earth could have happened at least 4 times before our own, assuming that the universe is 16 billion years old, and the earth 4 billion, and the only place it could have happened was here, which most scientists say. That leads me to another point. Why? What's our purpose. I think about global warming and the destruction of the earth, and then how similar things (mass extinctions) have happened already to our planet like 7 times. Such thinking brings me to how impeccably insignificant our planet is to the rest of the universe. If our earth was destroyed, it wouldn't even cause a faint ripple anywhere else but this part of the universe. I would say that life would go on, but that would be too ironic, even for me, seeing as how life doesn't, indeed, exist outside of earth. Don't worry, you're just...special. :D gussa 11-16-2006, 11:06 PM i dissaggree with your point abut earth being the only planet that can support life. if the universe really is infinite, then there is simply no way that our tiny planet could be the only one amongst millions that can support life. people think that life is delicate but scientists have found bacteria growing inside volcanoes. if liffe can live it out there, why not on another planet? Drunken_Shinobi 11-17-2006, 01:24 AM The universe is a very big place, there are possibly some living organisms on planets other than Earth. gwia 11-17-2006, 04:33 AM There would be infinate amount of dimensions, for every little thing, there would be a dimension for every word I say differently, for having my hair a different colour, for everything, it's amasing to think about. Natus Lumen 11-17-2006, 10:43 PM My friend explained to me the string theory the other day in geography class. I didn't get it very well, except for the main concepts of time and space, but this website was in greater detail. String theory.
