View Full Version : PDA or graphics card?
paranoia 08-10-2006, 02:40 AM I got $340 dollars from working, and I want to spend it on either:
1. An Nvidia 5700 with TV tuner
2. A Palm TX PDA
3. An Nvidia 6800.
My PDA is dying, but that graphics card is so tempting. What should I get?
I always hate when people say this, but wait a few days, don't buy on impulse.
The PDA. You can live without the graphics card for a while.

A Geforce 6800 for $340 is a horrible deal; you could get an X1900XT from newegg for that price.
Zetex 08-10-2006, 12:15 PM I would wait for dx10 to come out before I get a pricey video card

If you really care to go without a videocard until next year and even then most of Direct X10's features won't be utilized in games. The first generation of Direct X10 cards will basically be Direct X10 compliant GPUs, sort of the way Geforce 6 series cards support Shader Model 3.0.

I thought it was just a few more weeks....
Heyyou27 08-10-2006, 01:13 PM I thought it was just a few more weeks.... Direct X10 is Windows Vista only and you won't see it until Feb. or later.

ATI cards are out of the question, since I use Linux. The same goes for DirectX. And yes, there are a lot of 3D Linux games.

Actually ATI has gotten better with Linux, although Nvidia still has an advantage. http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/07/12/geforce_and_radeon_take_on_linux/index.html
If you really need an Nvidia card, you could get a 7900GT and have $100 left over. I wouldn't forget however that you use an outdated PC that probably is stuck on PCI or if you're lucky AGP 2x/4x. For PCI the best card you can get is a Geforce 6200, for AGP there is the 7800GS and 7600GS varients which would probably suit you.
paranoia 08-10-2006, 10:00 PM Actually, I do have AGP. But still, this would be like adding a Hemi V8 engine to a Pinto.
MrNaPaLm32 08-13-2006, 01:10 AM Direct X10 is Windows Vista only and you won't see it until Feb. or later. It WAS going to come out sooner until vista got delayed twice right?
paranoia 08-14-2006, 02:13 PM Nevermind. I got the PDA.

Basically; when Nvidia's G80 and ATI's R600 are released, they will be Direct X10 capable GPUs, however won't be able to utilize their new functions due to the Vista requirement. By the time Vista is out, the R600 refresh should be available and there will be no real point to buying the first R600. Most people are expecting the R600 refresh to be a die shrink from 80nm to 65nm, and it should come clocked significantly higher than the original.
