Alright, I'm wanting to upgrade my computer's speed for various reasons. I was wondering if someone could tell me what specs to focus on, and/or suggest various hardwares that work well.
*Note: If hearing about crap computers makes you ill, stop reading*

Ok, this is the little I know about my computer:
eMachines *I list this in case there are compatability issues with certain hardwares*
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+
2.19 GHz, 384 MB RAM

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Get 1 GB of RAM, trust me it will be very good for you.

Actually your PC isn't that bad; I'm wondering though, is it Socket 754 or 939? RAM would be a good idea, but if you told us what you want to do with your PC, that would be better.

I have no idea on the Socket question. >_<
What I'm wanting to do is make it possible for many people to connect to a private RO server I host, without creating lag on any end. Currently, only a handful of people can connect without some kind of lag. I need to fix this before the server grows.
Also, I'd like to be able to run multiple programs without noticeable lag. Because of the server, and several other factors, I'm often running a ton of programs, which creates massive lag on my computer.

So, anything that could help solve either of those problems is what I'm looking for. :P

If you have a 939. get a dual-core CPU. it will help a ton with the server. and RAM in servers is very critical. So get at least a gig of that.

the lag is more than likely because of your internet connection. that setup should be more than enough to run a small gameserver.

Ryu-Nacho
05-26-2006, 06:57 PM
Yeah, it's enough to run a small gameserver. My internet connection is ok, it's the comp I'm worried about. The server runs on the computer that I use for everything else. If I don't do anything else, or just do simple things like foruming, no one lags. But if I go much beyond that, things get pretty bad.

You need to download cpuz from www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php and take a screen shot of the program on the CPU tab.

Ryu-Nacho

Alrighty.

Heyyou27
05-26-2006, 08:38 PM
Well, you have a socket 754, so a dual core is out of the question. Although the fact that it's an OEM would make it hard if not impossible to upgrade the CPU anyways.

Ryu-Nacho
05-26-2006, 08:45 PM
Oooooh. That sucks. Any good, easily-upgradeable computers on the market that also happen to be wallet-friendly, by chance? :P

Yeah, it's called building your own. www.newegg.com

Ok...so, newegg+credit card+how to build computers for dummies=my next computer.
:P
I appreciate the help, but it'll be a while before I actually get to working on that. Still open to suggestions, but building my own comp looks like the only really good option at the moment. >_<

You could get a motherboard for $60-70 and an X2 3800+ for $297 or an Opteron 165 for $327, two 512MB sticks of RAM and a cheap videocard you'll be good to go.

It's no problem; if you told me your budget, I'd be able to figure where to put your money.

Well if you're not too good at assembling computers, always have a friend at hand who knows how to do it. Also if you live around California, around the City of Industry then the shipment will come in very fast, just how it was for me. It was fast and the parts came in good condition so I didn't have to worry about stuff breaking down before the computer was assembled.
Also just in case you need to make your own computer config use this (chode.org/c4).

Heh...
Budget: Low. I really shouldn't spend more than $1000-$1500 on it.

I already have a friend in mind in case something goes wrong. And, I'm in Kansas, with a bunch cows and farmers, so it'll be a while before I get the parts.

You can do a lot with $1,500.

Ryu-Nacho
05-26-2006, 10:31 PM
Yeah, but thats really on the high extreme end for me, considering that I'm supposed to be saving for some other stuff. >_>
Hontesly, I shouldn't buy anything at all. But I'd really love a nice comp. *The server players wouldn't mind either.*

You can still do a good amount with $1000.

Here (http://chode.org/c4/clean.php?config=Average%20computer) it is, but it sucks compared to Heyyou's config.

Heyyou27
05-26-2006, 11:13 PM
Yeah, go for my idea instead. The 6800XT is horrible compared to the X1800 XT.

It was a nice try though.

I also noticed you recommended a 5400RPM notebook hard drive?

In times like these I just click too fast. Usually when I want to seriously build a computer and actually get it, I would take my time looking for the right parts.

My dad has and a lot of other people I know have used other cases. Antec is good because they use quality parts, The cases wont cut you up when installing parts. But its just my opinion, Ok?

MrNaPaLm32
05-29-2006, 06:28 PM
I understand that. But there are plenty of cases that "dont cut you up" including mine. Ill go with you on saying that Antec are very good PC part manufacturers. But there are other ones that can run with them too.

NOWAK

Antec is okay I guess, I like their power supplies too, they are pretty good.
