Do you think silence is really silence? Or is it just a sound we got used to and don't really notice anymore....Hmmm...what do you guys think?!?!

Silence is silence. If there is any noise, then you can't call it silence. I'd say that if it's a noise that you're used to, it'd be "Peace and quiet".

That is a seriously deep question. I'd Ask Jeeves.

No silence is just when we don't hear things, but that does not mean there is no sound.

it depends on the was you define it, if you're talking about the threshhold of human hearing, then yes, there is silence. however, if you are talking about sound in general. there is no true "silence" sound waves are everywhere. no matter how weak. If the earth and our entire solar system were gone. sound waves would still come from stars outside the solar system. even though you cant hear them, because there is no air in space.

I'm partially deaf in my left ear.

The only place that silence exists in in a vacuum where sound cannot travel.

eg. space

not true. the human ear cannot percieve sound waves in space. this is a common misconception. sounds DO exist in space.

The Doctor

They exist, but the sound cannot travel in a vacuum as there are no particles for the sound to make vibrate. It is these vibrations that are sound waves. Without the waves, there is sound which cannot travel.

In other words...you can say, "In space...noone can hear you scream."

The Doctor

If the sound wave can't travel, noone can hear it so yes. noone can hear you scream, unless you have a radio in the space suit.

MrNaPaLm32
01-17-2006, 09:23 AM
but if your spacesuit had no air, you couldn't hear it either.
