AoM has too much strategy to it, and plays way too slow.
Any Blizzard RTS *Starcraft, Warcraft III* is good. The C&C series is also pretty good.
What else...
Oh, Warlords Battlecry II & III are pretty good too.

There are a few differant types.

First there's C&C(C&CTS) this is one good 2 sides. Then there AoE (AoEII) where you have ages (differant tech levels which you must achieve for better units) 7 differant sides. And 3 types of goods.
Then there is Dark Colony this is a RTS with big units. Much like warcraft but then not based on orcs and dwarfs but with guns. The units in C&C are 4x12 pixels. The units in warcraft are 10x20 pixels, sure there's zoom but these two show more graphic quality.
Then there's another differant type and one of the examples in Total Annihilation. Its currently on version3 but its not in the store. You buy version1 which has the engine. And you upgrade it to 3 with there website. This is again a 2 sides game. However there's 600 units on each sides.
Online abilties is something you might wanna look for too.
If you can find a copy of M.A.X. then thats also worth trying out.
Shogun:Total war is a RTS with roleplay elements. There is a whole become the next emporer by not only winning online battles but also strategicly send out spies outside of battle and into lands. Also geisha's who can assinate you.
Closing with Force Commander. This is also a differant type of RTS. This is not gather resources and build base. But on a big map there are unclaimed bases. These bases can be captured and units can be constructed. You dont start with a base, you start with units and the more space you claim, the more bases you will get the more units you can produce. Its a more of use units carefully. Warcraft has these types of aventures without bases where you only get a hero instead of a base, and then you resque units to increase your army. Guide your units poorly and you will not survive :D
