View Full Version : rss feeds
i'm going to be honest, i don't know how to use rss feeds. but apparently others do, and i've got quite a few requests for one. so here it is:
http://www.gprime.net/rss/
there are 3 different categories (flash animations, games, and videos), and each has 4 different options to choose from (last 5, last 10, last 15, or all). the xml feed *should* update itself automatically upon new content.
i'm not even really sure if it's set up properly becuase i don't have a way to test it.
diet poop 03-03-2005, 03:44 PM ive never even heard of rss feeds, what are they?
#1 AGAIN!! MOOT!
don't ask me ;] (and hey, what happened to the smilie menu?)
diet poop 03-03-2005, 03:58 PM i noticed thats too, apparently its not working in the frontpage news forum
its works fine everywhere else though :)
nineinchneil 03-03-2005, 04:06 PM you see those news tickers on sites like www.astalavista.com; you know those scrolling titles that give you the latest information on things? that's basically what an rss feed is emulating. if you have a web broswer like firefox, you can download a plugin for rss feeds, which adds a scrolling news ticker to the status bar at the bottom of your screen. the example i have below is for the game music site www.ocremix.org. it gives the latest songs that are uploaded on there. so, for gprime, the rss feed would be about the latest things that are uploaded on the site.

this concludes todays class. there'll be a pop quiz tomorrow. . .

Hooray! someone who knows what they're doing!!!
thats realy cool, i have firefox so i think ill try it :D
lukus001 03-03-2005, 05:09 PM And from what i'm told they triple you're bandwidth ;)
Ryu-Nacho 03-03-2005, 05:49 PM rss feeds are annoying in my opinions...they might be efficient once you get used to them, but thats really hard for me...I like fancy visuals...
Or am I even talking about what I saw? I dunno, cuz I've never heard the term rss feed till now...

Firefox has RSS capability built in. You get a little orange icon the the lower right portion of the status bar if its set up correctly.
you enable it in web pages by doing something like
<LINK REL="alternate" TITLE="Slashdot RSS" HREF="//slashdot.org/index.rss" TYPE="application/rss+xml">
in the head portion of the main web page and firefox will pick up on that.
nineinchneil 03-03-2005, 06:05 PM no, no, ryu-nacho, the rss feed doesn't replace the content on the website. it just is a way of updating you without having to visit the page. everytime i open up firefox, it shows me what's the latest topic on ocremix.org. if it's the same as it was yesterday, i won't bother going to the site. if it's new stuff, i'll click on it, and it'll take me to the site.
similarly, you can have as many rss feeds as you want, but only have one on display at a time. if you right-click on it, it'll show the other rss feeds you've subscribed to.
yeah it does add to your bandwidth, since the user can decide how often the rss feed should refresh (i have it refresh every half hour for my cnn.com rss feed, but about every 4 hours for other sites). i wouldn't say it triples bandwidth, but a site shouldn't have an rss feed unless it has adequate bandwidth to spare.
[edit] oh yeah, i forgot about that, blackice :P
firefox does add rss feeds without plugins, but it adds it as a bookmark, rather than a scrolling text format. it's just an aesthetic choice for me, i guess.
diet poop 03-03-2005, 06:11 PM hey nineinchneil, on firefox is the only way to have an rss feed thing the live bookmarks, or can you also have a scrolling thing on the toolbar? cause i know how to make the live bookmarks, and those are sort of annoying
kakaroto 03-04-2005, 01:16 AM Hi,
thx for the rss feeds :D
I didn't know what it was, but now I do.. for those who use opera browser, it's more simple than what you can imagine.. I just clicked on the xml files, opera automatically detected it's an rss feed, and added it to a "newsfeeds" directory inside the mail tab... it fetched automatically the latest animations/games/videos, and show then as if it were mail (opera is my web browser, but more importantly, my mail client).. then I just had to click on manage newsfeeds, I found those 3 newsfeeds already set up, and marked as "subscribed", and it will update every 1 hour.. I've set it up for every 10 hours.. now that's cool, I will automatically know when there is something new on gprime, without having to enter the site everyday...
thx for this john!!!

nineinchneil 03-04-2005, 01:35 AM diet, as far as i know, you can only make live bookmarks with the barebones firefox. in order to have a scrolling toolbar, you'll need to download a plugin (in firefox, they're called 'extensions'). just click on 'tools' up top and click on 'extensions'. that will open up a small windows where you can click on 'get more extensions'. that will open up a page for download all sorts of extensions. look under the 'news reading' category, for an extension called 'inforss'. that's the one that i use :)
also, i would highly recommend 'foxy tunes' under the 'entertainment' section. you'll figure out what it is; it's awesome!
diet poop 03-04-2005, 03:01 PM thanks neil, i was wondering what extensions were, i thought they were like media plugins and stuff. thank
you
.Living.With.You.Leaving. 03-05-2005, 01:30 PM I would like a "site update" rss feed because I have the flash feed running.. but what if you get video... and no flash... it would be way rad if you offered a feed of wether or not the front page has been updated... thank you...
p.s. i am lazy and don't want to have to check video and flash or run two feeds and switch back and forth.... that is why i asked...

mkpalumbo 04-27-2005, 12:37 AM Web Developers can also embed them in their web pages. So I can have a sidebar on my site that has the latest gprime videos, and it will constantly get updated without me having to do anything.
My audience then becomes aware of gprime.net.
TheWraith 04-27-2005, 01:48 AM Someone 'webmastering' a site and not aware of what RSS is or how it's utilized? We've truly hit rock bottom, people.
