View Full Version : Color scheme for a forum layout?
Well finally I've got a bit of time to spare, since I'm off school for a week.
I loved lukus001's new color scheme and assumed everyone else would as well, but a lot of people have posted negative things about it. So before I *attempt* (I need to emphasize that, I've never made a skin for vBulletin before) a layout for the forum, I need to get an idea of what colors people are most comfortable with. We may have 2 or 3 versions if there's enough demand (light, dark, and colored?).
Post any ideas for color schemes. (Example: black background, bright yellow table, lime green headers, purple text with pink poka-dots -- (sure hope not!)).
diet poop 03-01-2005, 07:46 AM hmmm... how about, yellow background, orange table,
and a darker green for the headers.
whoa, i just decribed the colors of a pumpkin, wierd :mf_death:
i dont realy think you have to change the forums colors though, they are fine the way they are
blackice 03-01-2005, 06:04 PM Why not grab a bunch of skins from vBulletin's site and let people choose their own?

the last samurai 03-03-2005, 11:13 AM dark blue background
and everything else the same
ummmm.... how about papyrus text tho????
johnnyboldt 03-04-2005, 12:16 AM I agree. Dark blue/black backround. Notice how ebaums, albinoblacksheep, and many more sites like yours all have similar layouts? It's there for a reason. The reason is those sort of layouts appeal to kids the most.
I never got around to making my own templates, but I used blackice's idea and downloaded some of vBulletins templates. They don't look any different other than the colours:
Default (http://gprime.net/board/showthread.php?t=378&styleid=1)
Yellow (http://gprime.net/board/showthread.php?t=378&styleid=5)
Blue (http://gprime.net/board/showthread.php?t=378&styleid=6)
I'll get around to making custom ones later (hopefully!)
Mario 03-04-2005, 02:36 PM i like the blue maybe a sliver??
diet poop 03-04-2005, 03:06 PM i think the yellow one is cool cause it matches the sites original look but its hard on the eyes 0_o
the last samurai 03-05-2005, 03:21 PM i prefer the blue one (not the default)
its easy on the eyes and its a change from all white and light blue
well done john :D
kewmat 03-07-2005, 12:36 PM i prefer the blue too. however maybe you can make it look identical to the page color scheme(s)?
RvGaTe 03-07-2005, 03:14 PM Why not start off using a fixed width.... ?
forums with 100% width are just plain gay...
lukus001 03-08-2005, 05:42 PM I agree. Dark blue/black backround. Notice how ebaums, albinoblacksheep, and many more sites like yours all have similar layouts? It's there for a reason. The reason is those sort of layouts appeal to kids the most.
Actually, based on colour theory and other 'things' Brighter colours appeal to children. This is why children's 'stuff'; programs on tv, toys, food/sweets - you name it have bright and colourful... colours.
Also, the reason ABS, ebaums, Kontrband and other sites usally have that style of site design isn't any master marketing ploy that was ingeniusly implemented to increase popularity.
One of the main reason is the type of site it is - They don't have membership subscription fees, or some form of massive income from the site - so they dont have the flexablilty that more business built site would have and thus be able to buy a "quality design". Therefore they usaly have to make it themselfs and a proper, well thought design doesn't actually appeal to be something necessary, content+page+ads = done.
But, sit a kid on any website that contains "things" they want - they wont actually care what the design looks like because they only care about the content ;)
Also ABS and ebuam arn't that popular, i've seen far larger sites and they have less of a ABS style design, and more "cleaner" or professional designs, like weeble and bob / weeble stuff !!! madblast and miniclips im sure some of u know and some even more popular / cleaner site that i can't say cause of the adult content. The only real reason 'those' sites are popular is infact because they display content for free on a fast server with regular updates that people want to see.
i think it's almost safe to say when designing a site you dont actually have to "care about the kids" in the long run caring for the adult sorts all the necessarys like navigation that is also a good feature for kids, but in the long run as a kid you dont really care about anything apart from the content you want.
Just had to be said cause i am a designer XD otherwise i respect you're opinion ;)

Do you take requests? I found a Firefox (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=122248) one that looks interesting.
.Living.With.You.Leaving. 03-13-2005, 04:01 PM The only thing i would like to see is a matching scheme so its not like going to the boards is like visiting a different site.. so since you have two schemes for the site.. why not use those colors... so everything matches...
dcp7777 03-13-2005, 07:33 PM Thanks a lot...I can't see, and every once in a while when I can see, my eyes twitch. Take off the yellow!
