View Full Version : A theif on the board.
Dark Wolf 08-16-2005, 05:05 PM I have noticed that you seem to have people from this forum that like to steal signatures from other forums. Namely this one from AC.net
http://www.gprime.net/board/member.php?u=1796
How dishonest can you get. This person also stole it from one of the owners as well as the forum admin. Sad really. It's not really appreciated that others peoples works are stolen. That is plageruism and I hope that action against this person is taken.
chikins r us 08-16-2005, 05:09 PM yeah i guess you're right thats cruel.
Yes. I am a bad person. Throw things at me.

I don't think the admin will respond to someone who just signed up, so they could rat on our beloved GEOman.
Heyyou27 08-16-2005, 05:39 PM Yes. I am a bad person. Throw things at me.
You should be ashamed! It wasn't copyrighted by the original creator, yet you still stole it!
Led_Zeppelin 08-16-2005, 05:41 PM Know what? I'm going to rip off that idea.
There. I did it.

Yeah. You gotta work harder then normal stealing to do that.
blackice 08-16-2005, 05:51 PM plagiarism
n 1: a piece of writing that has been copied from someone else and is presented as being your own work 2: the act of plagiarizing; taking someone's words or ideas as if they were your own
It doesn't quite fit. I dont think a picture qualifies as "a piece of writing" or "someone's words or ideas". He also never claimed that he created the image as far as I know.
For the record, nothing was ever stolen or copied. A publicly available image was hotlinked by more than one person on more than one forum. This is the risk that you take when you post content to the internet without some form of access control.

May I suggest some reading material? How about starting at http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html#hsc.
Guys, what was really the problem is that my old signature had 2 images. The edit button and the image that was "stolen". I noticed people taking buttons from the forum also and I decided to let everyone know that was my idea. So I put this: ^My Idea^. Under the edit button. These people must have thought that I was referring to that image.
treefalse 08-16-2005, 07:02 PM I made my own "Post reply" button. I got the idea from GEOman with his edit button.
Led_Zeppelin 08-16-2005, 07:09 PM I stole the idea, just not forum related.
treefalse 08-16-2005, 07:16 PM Way to go! That's the spirit!
Darkbeat 08-16-2005, 08:12 PM Seems people here have a very limited idea on what plagiarism really is, even the admin. Shame...sorry to say so...
Apparently you don't seem to comprehend that there are taggers who are trying their best to make a signature and put a lot of effort into it. The last thing that they want is that it is used by someone else without asking. Did you "beloved" GEOman had permission to use it?
This question can be simply answered with a 'no'.
It isn't a matter if he claims to have made it himself...it's a matter of principle here. Next to that, most people who use a tag in their sig without giving credit to the original creator, make other people assume that the person made it himself. Ever thought about that one?
Like I said, people who put effort in their work, don't like it when it is used by someone else, who didn't get proper permission, let alone that credit was given...
Maybe something to think about, neh?

But it isn't illegal since he didn't copyright it.
Darkbeat 08-16-2005, 09:08 PM Is that how you look at newbs? That their posts don't matter...
Pretty lame don't you think?
Oh well not that I care now...the sig is removed and my stuff is done...have a nice day
(where's a retard smiley when you need one...)
Oh wait...it isn't. Hate to say it but the signature had a watermark in it...definitely something which makes it copyrighted.
Next to that...newbs? The forum I come from would eat your forum for lunch, so please let's NOT get started with newbie-ism, thank you very much!
Please stop this support guys. I am perfectly capable to handle this issue alone.
Led_Zeppelin 08-16-2005, 10:29 PM Kick some ass, GEOman!
blackice 08-16-2005, 10:34 PM The reason why it was the same is because it literally was the exact same image. It was being linked from the exact same place on the internet. You came here asking that it be removed, and it was. As far as I am concerned, there is nothing more to talk about.
Fantastic1, How do you know it wasn't copyrighted? If the creator is in the US, he/she automatically gets copyright protection upon creation of the work.
Darkbeat, my view on plagiarism is not 'limited'. I was merely quoting the definition and pointing out that what occured did not meet that definition. Do a search for 'hotlinking'. That is what happened.
GEOman has requested that he handle this himself, so consider this matter closed. If anyone else has anything to say, take it up in the private message system.
