According to CNET, Microsoft's newest licensing model for the next-generation XBox will effectively lock out 3rd-party accessory manufacturers (http://news.com.com/Digging+profits+out+of+Xbox/2100-1043_3-5827110.html?tag=nefd.lede) who don't enroll in Microsoft's licensing and royalty program. The new console will employ hardware security mechanisms to ensure that only products created by developers willing to fork over cash to Microsoft can connect to and work with the console. Is Microsoft shooting itself in the foot by making traditional 'approved product' licensing mandatory for 3rd-party developers? Or will companies line up by the dozens to tithe to King Bill? Finally, will Sony follow a similar strategy to eke additional revenues out of its PlayStation 3?

and then there will be the people that crack the system to hell, so there is no difference from a computer and the console, except it plays that console specific games. but yea i see what u are saying i dont think it will effect it much i mean there isnt any relly good 3rd party stuff for the xbox in the first place except the microcon (which i personaly dont relly like) and the portable screen but i bet they will pay royalties

The point of this article was supposed to be to start this discussion:

Is it for quality control, they want to have a monopoly, or because of sheer greed?

All could be the factor, or it could be to help keep the price of consoles down by making third party hardware manufacturers cough up royalties, like third party software developers must.
