I am looking to buy a new laptop but i dont really understand the differences of the centrino (centrino im looking at is an Intel® Pentium M, 755 Processor) and pentium four. I heard that centrino is supposedly slower but can do more work per cycle? i dont fully comprehend what this statement means at all. So if anyone could help, which is a better buy for someone who wants a quality computer, like for a student's needs, for a decent price (explaining the "slower but more work per cycles may help as well).

I would go with Centrino. My friend says it's good. He's had it for a couple months and he always seems to be on the internet.

Ok. It all depends on what you're doing. If you're using programs that take alot raw processing power, the Pentium 4 is for you. Also, is it a Pentium 4 Hyper Threading? or a regular Pentium 4. If it is a regular Penitum 4, get the Centrino. Centrinos have a much better battery life and are very power efficent vs. the Pentium 4.

yea like if ur gunna use it 4 gaming get the pentium 4 but if u need battery get the centrino. but 1 important thing to remember never get a celeron. celeron is like i am 2.8 ghz but i run like a 1 ghz. also the centrino has a higher level 1 and 2 chash(ithink thats what it is) so it can do more things at once. personaly id go with the centrino for a laptop and a pentium 4 for home since the home is pluged in all the time so it can spare more energy. the centrino save energy relly well so u have a longer battery life span.

hope that made sense im not to good at explaining things.

Thanks everyone. You guys told me a lot about the two and their strengths. I'll probably get the centrino cause all I really do is go on a few sites, chat with my friends, music, and hw. Anyways, saving energy means I save money, and thats always a good thing.

what does it matter you never explained what you wanted it for which means your probably better off with the pentium 2, because anybody who was wanting a good processor wouldn't make such a dumb thread.

i would strongly recommend a Centrino laptop with Pentium-M unless you are getting a desktop replacement
i'm not exactly sure, but i believe a 1.6 Pentium-M is equivalent to a 2.6 Pentium 4, due to operations per cycle
here's a whole bunch of detailed info that i didn't feel like reading through:
