View Full Version : "Swine Flu"

I think its just a bunch of BS. Probably going to turn out like the whole bird flu pandemic that was going to wipe out half the world. The news is just looking for a story.

Zetex
04-26-2009, 12:06 PM
The news isn't "looking for a story". This is a story. Over 60 people have already died and it's possible it's already spread to New Zealand (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/health/article6171388.ece). A risk of a pandemic is nothing to take lightly, especially since people are constantly traveling in today's age and a potentially fatal virus that no known human is immune to can easily spread from person to person.
But is the news overreacting a bit right now? Of course they are. Media in America overreacts to just about everything or just simply ignores it. There's no in between.

Everyone is already dead.

Nicky
04-26-2009, 07:48 PM
That is a very morbid and depressing outlook...?

I dunno insan3. If it's speaking about something like a risk of an epidemic, like Zetex said, I wouldn't just brush it off or take it lightly. Even if they are just looking for a story, it's still unwise to blow it off like it's nothing. I saw a headline a few days ago saying something pertaining to drugs being found in certain water supplies, and I told it to a person I was with at the time and she completely ignored me. Then later I asked her why she ignored me, and her reasoning was because even if that were true, there was "nothing she could do about it anyway", and then her second reason was because "If we drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt us." (Mark 16:18), to which I could only reply with a blank stare. I realize that's not exactly your case. I just need to rant about it because I' constantly surrounded by this irrational behavior, and only recently am I beginning to question it.

But anyway, I think being at least somewhat concerned is a good thing.

Yeah I'm not sure. I guess I shouldnt take it lightly, I just think like you guys said its being over hyped at this point, but who knows, it could turn out to be nothing or really the next pandemic.

not really... in fact every time i see one i get angry...

whenever the news goes overboard about some kind of flu / aids / virus, we become a little more and more desensitized each time. to the point where a REAL epidemic breaks out, the news screams out HOLY CRAP ITS GONNA KILL EVERYONE, and we don't believe them. hell it is already happening in some people. they completely disregard news because it lies or its biased or its simply out to make you watch the ads and make them money.
news makers never heard the story bout the boy who cried wolf..

A swine flu outbreak in Fort Dix, New Jersey occurred in 1976 that caused more than 200 cases with serious illness in several people and one death.
It's over, we're finished.

Zetex

It's over, we're finished.

Medical historians and epidemiologists say there are many differences between the relatively benign 1976 outbreak and the current strain of swine flu that is spreading across the globe.
http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1894129,00.html

Here's a neat little Google Maps tracker of the flu. It's updated usually before it even hits the news.

Can I get swine influenza from eating or preparing pork?
No. Swine influenza viruses are not spread by food. You cannot get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork products is safe.

it stated that eating pork is safe no less than three times.. yet you all still start talking about how dangerous eating pork can be?

I know it's irrational, and I get sick all the time, but it's scaring me because I've been feeling really weird lately; Two days ago I woke up and my abdomen was really sore, and it still is. Late this morning my breathing started acting strangely (it just makes me dizzy to breathe deeply, and when I breathe out all the way I immediately feel really out of breath), and now my throat is really sore and I'm coughing. I'm also exhausted no matter how much I sleep, and that's a symptom too.

I know it's really likely that it's just silly paranoia. Still, I wonder if I should stay home tomorrow and see my doctor. I just have a Shakespeare workshop tomorrow and the next day that I really wanted to be there for. :/

Do you have a fever? That's what I'd go by. Just treat it like any other sickness, if you feel too crappy to go, stay home. Otherwise don't worry about it.

yes because just like in 1350. we have severe overcrowding coupled with a terrible sanitary system, no knowledge of how the disease spreads, primitive forms of medicine that include bleeding an use of leeches and no experience whatsoever in the nature of a pandemic.
not to mention, the church is telling us that if you get the disease, it's because you have sinned against the lord almighty and this is your punishment.
