Anyone here planning on getting it, and what are your thoughts? I'll probably end up buying it on day one, even though I feel like it won't be as good as the original.

I don't know, even though everyone loves it I just group in GeOW with all the other super-slick but incredibly boring next (current?) gen games. I guess it has a few cool ideas but not enough character (as in style) in it. How many times has the "gritty and disgruntled soldier" thing been done?

How many times has the "gritty and disgruntled soldier" thing been done?That is one thing that is concerning me with the sequel; the original Gears of War did not care about story, but was strong thanks to its gameplay mechanics and impressive graphics. Epic has said that they are going to spend more time developing the story, and the graphical improvements are looking to be pretty minor over the previous title. If Gears of War had faced stronger competition I doubt it would be rated as highly as it was. For Microsoft though, Gears of War did everything they wanted to and more. It crushed its competition on the PS3 graphically and to date it has sold over 5 million copies and became a strong Xbox360 exclusive franchise.

I heard pre-ordering Special Edition gets you a tin case and a life size weapon.
