View Full Version : Album of the year
I nominate (In no particular order):
Okkervil River-The Stage Names
The Arcade Fire-Neon Bible
Burial-Untrue
Animal Collective-Strawberry Jam
Panda Bear-Person Pitch
Radiohead-In Rainbows
Most disappointing (to me):
The Smashing Pumpkins-Zeitgeist
Modest Mouse-We Were Dead
Bloc Party-A Weekend in the City
Erm... Silent Alarm wasn't released this year...
Sorry about that, I meant Weekend in the City.
Natus Lumen 12-18-2007, 10:50 AM Coheed and Cambria - No World For Tomorrow
Blaqk Audio - Cexcells
Siriustar 12-18-2007, 04:01 PM Going with Radiohead - In Rainbows and Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity. I'm half-tempted to list 20 other albums that might be more fitting, but I'm busy and I don't give a shit.
Actually, Burial - Untrue is really awesome dubstep, and Pinback - Autumn of the Seraphs is in heavy rotation.

Yeah, Radiohead's new album was a damn good one.

Modest Mouse's new album pwned serious face, soooo. FAIL.

I thought it was by FAR their best album, so I didn't find it dissapointing. Which is what I meant.

I can officially say without fear of contradiction that Lupe Fiasco's The Cool is so far the Best album of the year (across the board). You now have *counts* 12 days to bring a new contender. In Rainbows is a close second, and I also kinda liked NINs Year Zero
Natus Lumen 12-19-2007, 09:42 AM Steve Vai's newest album should win in the category of musical compositions.
=====
No.
Okay so maybe cexcells wasn't that great, but No World For Tomorrow is probably my favorite CD that's come out in the last three years. Or so.
Siriustar 12-19-2007, 11:24 AM I thought it was by FAR their best album, so I didn't find it dissapointing. Which is what I meant.
what the fuck is wrong with you, how can you even say that, etc.
There are times when I'd rather listen to The Fruit That Ate Itself than WWDBTSES
They all pale in comparison to The Cool, and here's why:
1)None of your contenders appeal to as wide an audience
2) Lupe's album is the polar opposite to the Xeroxed formula that has been pushed in the genre for the past 5 years. The same can't be said of the others. They're good, but truly, is it anything new? No
3) The contenders just aren't as Cool (I know, shameless plug. I had to do it.)
4) Seriously, this guy is Tom Waits and Johnny Cash rolled in one when it comes to the storytelling
what the fuck is wrong with you, how can you even say that, etc.

Hey now, Fruit was pretty good.
I just posted two comprehensive (albeit, slightly repetitive) arguments on subject, and I get ignored twice. Talk about lacking etiquette. The least you could've done was give me a "STFU" and let that be that.

Attention please! The time has come for a stunning announcement: THESE ARE ALL OPINIONS. EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN. I DO NOT LIKE THE COOL. MURDOCH DOESN'T LIKE WWDBTSES. THAT IS OK. WE DON'T ALL HAVE TO AGREE ON EVERYTHING. Thank you for your attention.
And Razor, there is nothing wrong with me. I just prefer WWDBTSES to any of Modest Mouse's previous albums.

Lupe Fiasco will never win album of the year, because for one it's A RAP ALBUM and rap albums never win.
And second of all...
http://www.grammy.com/GRAMMY_Awards/50th_Show/list.aspx
Oh look! Lupe Fiasco's The Cool isn't even on the list for "Album of the Year"! Looks like you lose that one.
Okay, to Gabriel: I never said you'd like it. I just stated a truth. The Cool does appeal to a wider audience and Lupe's album is a breath of fresh air in a genre growing stagnant, on the basis that it is incomparable with any other hip hop record in modern history ( which is basically ever because let's face it, hip hop isn't even quite 30 yet). I can't say that about In Rainbows, or Year Zero, or No World for Tomorrow, despite how much I may like them. HOW IS THAT BIASED/ OFFENSIVE ENOUGH FOR YOU TO MAKE AN ISSUE OF IT???
@Axel: Listen manure face, I never once said it would win album of the year at any award show, just that I thought it was. Besides you poon, the nomination period for the 50th Grammys closed a long while before the album was even released. You hardly ever get any 4th quarter nominations the same year. That's why Lupe's first album is still garnering nominations.
You flushed turd.
Have a nice night btw
gabrielwhist 12-19-2007, 07:56 PM Whats offensive is that you are stupid enough, and arrogant enough to state your own opinion, which is of no greater validity than anyone elses, as a fact. Especially when you are stating it to a community which would largely disagree with you.

Yeah it is, 'cause last time I checked Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails were far more popular than this "Lupe Fiasco" kid.
Second of all, how the fuck can you say this is the best hip hop record in modern history? You clearly haven't listened to enough hip hop, because no hip hop fan would call The Cool the best hip hop record in modern history.
Have you ever listened to A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, The Roots or even 2pac? If you have, I doubt you'd be calling Lupe Fiasco's The Cool "incomparable to any hip hop record in modern history".
edit: Saw Sen's edit. lul, he insulted me.

Hello, pot.
no hip hop fan would call The Cool the best hip hop record in modern history.
Umm... (http://therapup.rawkus.com/2007/12/album-of-the-year.html) Besides, I never said that. You need to learn how to read, asshole.

Hmm. Again, ass. I didn't say it was better than any Hip Hop album in history, just different. As for A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and The Roots, I have their entire discography. And I have all of Pac's B.D. work and most of the posthumous stuff as well.
Yeah it is, 'cause last time I checked Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails were far more popular than this "Lupe Fiasco" kid.
Ya know, if you would just lift your eyes off your own ass crack for a second... I didn't say anything about popularity. I just said that Lupe's album would appeal far more groups of people i.e. Radiohead may pull 50k capacity crowds to there concerts, but they are all rockheads, and loyal Radiohead fans at that. Lupe may only pull a tenth of that, but there will be rockers, boarders, those griot freaks, and most of them might not even be there for him, but they will bump his music. The fact is, you could get a kid from the Harlem projects and a nerdy white kid from the suburbs in Maryland and they would both enjoy it. Maybe for different reasons, but that's just another testimony as to how good it is
edit: Saw Sen's edit. lul, he insulted me.
No I didn't. You are a poon, you do have a manure face and right now you are as annoying as that piece of shit that just won't flush.
But let's not let the night go down on our wrath... Don't worry, be happy.

Krusty_The_Klown 12-19-2007, 09:21 PM Also, I think Eminem's Marshal Mathers LP won album of the year a while ago.

Lulz. But on a point of actual worth, you can't just say that a nerdy white kid and a kid from the Harlem projects would both enjoy it. I mean, maybe there is one white nerd (you) who likes it, and maybe there is one kid from the Harlem project who likes it. Maye there are multiples from each group. But that doesn't mean that everyone from both of those groups will. You can't make sweeping generalizations like that. It just makes you look stupid and arrogant. Sorry for the rant.
Funny you of all people should say that... XD
Come on Nicky, don't be a bitch, you're better than that. You of all people should know that there is a difference between music and theology. And the debate section is there to, guess what, DEBATE! The music section is not about forcing your opinions on other people.

You're kidding, right? Lupe Fiasco will only attract "black kids" or wanna be "black kids". That's as far as he goes.

Nah, it was just a nomination.
Krusty_The_Klown 12-19-2007, 09:56 PM Oh, because he was holding the trophy and everything. I'm not too savvy in pop-culture mainly because I don't give a shit if a celebrity burped at dinner.
gabrielwhist 12-19-2007, 09:57 PM Agreed.

Yes it is... as you can plainly see in this thread, and many many others.
gabrielwhist 12-19-2007, 10:02 PM No, it isn't. And it shouldn't be either.
Nicky 12-19-2007, 10:03 PM K... well, g'night. Look forward to seeing how this turns out in the morning. You know.. assuming this thread will still be open.
Supa Fool 12-19-2007, 10:04 PM The Pretender will win record of the year. Just watch.
The Pretender was a song, not the album.
And anyways the album of the year is supposed to be good.

1. I said record
2. Look at the nominations link, category 1
:P
1. What?
2. No one cares about the Grammy's.
gabrielwhist 12-20-2007, 01:41 AM Still, thats what you are arguing. You said the Album of the Year is supposed to be good, he pointed out that its in the running for Album of the Year.
We're arguing what we think is the Album of the year, not some mainstream awards show.
Frank 12-20-2007, 01:53 PM I think the foo fighters new album is one of the best albums of the year in my opinion.
Natus Lumen 12-20-2007, 06:19 PM Oh my God.
WTF?
Why are the categories for the grammies so crammed full of music that sucks? Seriously. Even emo bands are making their ways onto the charts.
=====
EDIT: except the Chemical Brothers, Tiesto, The White Stripes, Ozzy, Tool, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, but they're all under for the lame awards. Yes, I know this is opinion but still.
And Lupe Fiasco is in the Grammy nominations, just not under album of the year.
Soulja Boy has a nomination in best rap song.
Fucking Barack Obama AND Bill Clinton are up for Grammies under spoken word categories.
And Pan's Labyrinth (which was an AMAZING movie) is up under musical score.

Natus Lumen 12-20-2007, 06:34 PM Charming.
I still think Coheed had the best album of the year. It's the only album I've listened to that I can really listen to for one full hour without having to hit the skip button.
gabrielwhist 12-20-2007, 07:45 PM Coheed is kinda like muzak to me. Its nothing special, but its tolerable enough to listen to for long periods. But albums I actually want to listen to all the way through more than once? Rare. Very. The only ones in recent memory are Sam's Town, and WWDBTSES. I like most of Sawdust, but there are a number of ones I am not so fond of.
Supa Fool 12-20-2007, 10:43 PM I think the foo fighters new album is one of the best albums of the year in my opinion.
Yep, it is. Not best, but definitely a contender.

I have four of those: No World For Tomorrow and Second Stage Turbine Blade by Coheed, Close to the Edge by Yes, and part 1 of The Wall by Pink Floyd.
Supa Fool 12-20-2007, 11:54 PM Black Parade, One-X, The Sufferer and the Witness

I said modern. If I was counting classic rock, or even rock from a few years ago there would be many more albums on that list.
Natus Lumen 12-21-2007, 02:02 PM Oh right. Then I only have about two modern albums I would be able to listen to from beginning to end.

blackice 12-21-2007, 07:44 PM Just slightly
Fair enough. I've lost interest in him for some reason. I just can't listen to him for long periods.
blackice 12-21-2007, 11:46 PM Yeah his newer stuff isn't nearly as good as Pretty Hate Machine or The Downward Spiral
I thought the Fragile was pretty good, and Year Zero wasn't nearly as bad as With Teeth.

The Appleseed Cast.
Actually Axel, I recommend you listen to them. Anything except Two Conversations is good.
I've listened to them, they're "meh" to me. Don't really have a liking for them.
By listen I mean 30 second samples on last.fm.

Really? Some of their songs have a post-rock kind of buildup, so the clips might not do them justice. I can send an album if you want, but whatev.

Not really, but the beats are sweet. My fav is 'Breaking My Heart'
