View Full Version : Sentimental Songs
Siriustar 07-12-2007, 11:22 AM Does anyone ever connect certain songs with moments in their lives? For instance, say the song was playing while the moment was happening, or the lyrics just describe the situation so well that the song seems written just for you? Because I do that all the time.
Architecture In Helsinki's Do the Whirlwind was playing the first time I kissed my current girlfriend, and however much I loved that song before is amplified many times. I was listening to the album Louden Up Now by !!! the first time I got drunk, so that album reminds me of how much of a fuck-up my junior year of high school was. Tool's Stinkfist reminds me of the first really traumatic experience I had, it was playing on the radio when a tractor trailer almost crushed my car on Interstate 70. The song Left Unfinished by Machine Head reminds me of my bloodsucker of an ex-girlfriend.
Got any more?
gussa 07-12-2007, 11:26 AM that 3am song by simon and garfunkel....
The whole Siamese Dream and Moon and Antarctica albums
Most Radiohead songs
Arcade Fire-Wake Up
Pink Floyd-Dogs
There are more, those are just the only ones I can remember right now.
Edit: Oh you want me to explain why? Ok, well Siamese Dream (Specifically "Mayonnaise") reminds me of the time on a trip to Washington DC with my 8th grade class and everything sucked (I won't go into details, but take my word for it, it was horrible). M&A reminds me of last summer when I felt good about things and I would always take walks in the middle of the night (I still do, but they aren't as fun), I swear that it's easier to breath late at night. I listen to Dogs everytime my Dad is being a dick. I don't feel like explaining the others.
Natus Lumen 07-12-2007, 04:58 PM Every time I hear the chorus of Ocean Breathes Salty by Modest Mouse I remember hanging out at Zilker Park during ACL festival three years ago when they played the Summer after they released GNFPWLBN.
Everytime I hear any song from the first half of Weezer's Blue Album I think of all this drama that happened with my girlfriend and her friend and I when we first started going out three years ago.
When I hear "I'm All Out of Love" by Air Supply I think of the post-party scene from the movie Out Cold...and can't help but laugh randomly.
When I hear "Butterfly" by DJ Mystik I think of spending every day and a bunch of nights two Summers ago in Gattitown challenging everone in the arcade to DDR, kicking their asses, and eventually being kicked out of the arcade for the rest of the Summer.
When I listen to Neverender by Coheed and Cambria I think of the plane ride to London last Summer where a couple spent THREE FREAKING HOURS in the cramped bathroom of the airplane doing god knows what while I had to pee like freaking crazy.
I'm sure there are more, but I don't want to further pronounce my title as gprime's longest-winded poster.
gabrielwhist 07-12-2007, 10:26 PM Whenever I hear Hot Fuss, I think of the Edge Chronicles, because I read the series while listening to the CD. Whenever I hear Box Car Racer I think of 6th grade, and fondly remember a time before life went to shit.
The Perfect Seven 07-12-2007, 10:56 PM Anything by Relient K reminds me of junior high and awkward dating relationships. Also a few years ago I burned a CD of a bunch of sad songs that I listened to constantly. Especially Give It Up and On Your Porch by The Format, remind me of being depressed. Oh teenage angst!

I identify with the Box Car Racer part, with the time before life went to shit. Except for me it was my classic rock obsession in 7th and 8th grade. The Summer before I started 7th grade were the final of my innocent days, and that was when I was at the verge of changing from who I was then to who I am now. Those were my '90s alternative/classic rock days. Green Day, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Sublime were my favorite bands.
Siriustar 07-12-2007, 11:18 PM Fischerspooner's Just Let Go reminds me of all the good times I had this past senior year [including breakdancing with my friend Charlie in front of our entire senior class, which we actually did to the song Emerge by the same dudes (which is a different story entirely)].
Connected story: I'm sure some of you crazy kids have vandalized mailboxes and road signs, huh? Well while Just Let Go was playing, five of us were speeding up some back road in the middle of nowhere, and we had some hams in the car (we volunteered our time at a food bank for National Honor Society, and they gave us their nasty expired leftovers to take home to our families) so we decided to chuck some leaky ham quarters from the sides of the vehicle. I found it ironic that the guys were shouting "LET IT GO" while the chorus of the song was saying "JUST LET GO".
It was as if the song was speaking to me.
Natus Lumen 07-12-2007, 11:28 PM I love it when that happens. Like when your girlfriend breaks up with you and the next song that comes on the radio is "Fuck Love" or something like that.
Siriustar 07-12-2007, 11:35 PM I love it when that happens. Like when your girlfriend breaks up with you and the next song that comes on the radio is "Fuck Love" or something like that.
See if something like that happens to me, the next song on the radio is like "We Are Family" or some cheesetastic Twisted Sister. Always.
gussa 07-13-2007, 08:17 AM anything by national pornographic reminds me of an awesome concert i went to (mainly because they were playing there :P)
Natus Lumen 07-13-2007, 02:54 PM See if something like that happens to me, the next song on the radio is like "We Are Family" or some cheesetastic Twisted Sister. Always.
It's the opposite for me. I can turn on the radio and hit any button and whatever song comes on will fit the situation.
Nicky 07-13-2007, 03:09 PM Anything by Smash Mouth makes me wish I were eight years old again.
Siriustar 07-13-2007, 04:21 PM No offense for Smash Mouth fans, but nobody should like Smash Mouth and they make me want to kill myself.
Natus Lumen 07-13-2007, 04:51 PM I remember Smash Mouth...I pretty much agree with Nicky Chris, except I always think of the first Shrek when I think of Smash Mouth.
Nicky 07-13-2007, 04:56 PM Ah yes... before all the sequals and thirds.....
There's gonna be a Shrek 4 you know... and a Puss In Boots spin off as well. They have a ruined a once good franchise.
No offense for Smash Mouth fans, but nobody should like Smash Mouth and they make me want to kill myself.
I never said they were the greatest band in the world. I just find them nostalgic... and with that, I also happen to rather enjoy their music as well. Although I think it's because it's nostalgic.
gabrielwhist 07-13-2007, 06:51 PM No offense for Smash Mouth fans, but nobody should like Smash Mouth and they make me want to kill myself.
I agree whole heartedly.
Natus Lumen 07-14-2007, 03:23 PM Nostalgia in songs happens especially with movies and their soundtracks.
gabrielwhist 07-14-2007, 07:30 PM Not for me. Movies aren't all that reminiscent in my opinion.
Natus Lumen 07-14-2007, 11:02 PM There are some movies that are. Like when I hear a cheesy 80s song I think of the Breakfast Club, because all the cheesy 80s pop songs sound the same.
And when I hear "Sleep Song" by Rooney I think of that part in The Chumscrubber where Dean walks in on Troy hanging dead in his apartment, and then later when Dean goes crazy. And "Baby Got Back" and "I'm all out of Love" by Air Supply remind me of the movie Out Cold.
gabrielwhist 07-15-2007, 12:56 AM I can see how a song COULD remind you of a movie, I am just saying that they don't for me. At least not very often. And don't be dissin the 80s pop songs! Take On Me rocks so much face! Also, Journey is pretty cool, Don't Stop Believing!
