You know if you had a father in the computer business and a connection to the internet (reading forums) then you could learn about computers just like I did. growing up with them in the house since being a child also helps.

Ah, I know about swords and writing, but only because I am fascinated with the two of them.

thanks. Is the Pentium 4 Northwood based or Prescott? Either way the Sempron would be considerably faster, especially when overclocked. The X2 3800+ would be close to 2x as fast in single threaded apps, and the gap would only widen further when multi-threading is used. The problem with a socket AM2 platform comes from the requirement of good low latency DDR2 800 for optimal AM2 performance, where Intel's Core 2 series performs very well no matter how good or bad the RAM is.

here is a cpuz screen cap,

So the ram I listed would not be that good for the rig?

Oh gosh, it's a Willamette; When Intel first released the Pentium 4 Willamette cores, they were only clocked up to 1.7GHz, and actually performed slower than the 1.4GHz Pentium 3s they were replacing thanks to their longer 20 stage pipeline, vs. the 10 stages of the Pentium 3.
Anyways, the RAM you listed is not by any means ideal, but even with Value RAM, the Sempron and X2 3800+ would outperform that old Pentium 4 by a huge margin.
